Classic Literature & Book Illustrations
Throughout our career, we have illustrated numerous Ancient and Modern literature masterpieces by bestselling fiction authors. This gallery showcases a curated selection of our award-winning artworks for the world's most celebrated classic literature.
“Our work on the great novels of classic authors began many years ago. We have been fortunate to illustrate numerous literary works for adult audiences—a truly niche production in the landscape of book publishing. For us, illustrating a novel is like making a film; each project is a unique and unrepeatable journey. When we set out into a new literary world, we must imagine its characters, environments, costumes, sets, lighting, color, feelings, emotions, and passions. In all our work, we draw not only on our knowledge of fine art but also on our training in graphic design, merging our two souls: painterly and graphic.”
You can fully experience this dialogue in our current solo exhibition, 'Balbusso Twins: Illustrating with Two Souls', on view at the Society of Illustrators in New York, which celebrates our 25-year career alongside our exclusive official catalog designed by Pentagram.

Our Craftsmanship & Haute Couture Philosophy
Much like Haute Couture in fashion, we view our illustrated books as unique, unrepeatable masterpieces tailored with meticulous precision. Our creations are never serial or standardized; each project is rooted in deep artistic research and extensive study, customized to meet the specific vision of our clients. There are no shortcuts, no tricks, and no virtual filters or ready-made brushes—only intense, time-consuming hard work, profound dedication, patience, and care to consistently deliver the absolute highest quality.
Our technical process intimately integrates traditional fine art mediums—such as pencil, pen, watercolor, gouache/tempera, collage, and frottage—with digital tools. To avoid flat, computer-generated processing, acrylic spray is manually applied to achieve sophisticated gradients characterized by a subtle, irregular analog grain. Every texture and brushstroke is crafted by hand on paper to build a complex, organic surface layer. The color is deeply layered, mimicking the texture of a traditional fresco where the physical depth of the raw pigments can be visually perceived. By dedicating precise attention to preserving these physical pictorial layers, we guarantee the exact same quality and color depth as a painting executed with physical pigments.
Throughout the creative process, we conduct multiple test press runs, working side-by-side with master printers and leveraging their professional technology. This meticulous fine-tuning during production ensures that our final artwork—ultimately delivered as a digital file—guarantees an impeccable fine art print result with a flawless and technically uncompromised execution on the page.
